0009. India - International Lighthouse & Lightship Week (7th - 22nd Aug'2010)


Surathkal Point Lighthouse was choosen for the 3rd International Lighthouse & Lightship Week being celebrated in India from 7th - 22nd August 2010. 

A private Special Cover was released at the Surathkal Lighthouse by the Lions District Governor with assistance from Lions Club International Amateur Radio Club Station VU2LCI.  The Cover has the Permanent Picture Cancellation of the Mangalore Lighthouse.

0008. India - Kadalur Point Lighthouse




Kadalur Point Lighthouse was established on 20th October 1909.  This is to mark the submerged rock "Vellayam Kallu".   For the last 100 years, the Kadalur Point Lighthouse is serving the seafarers.

To commemorate the Centenary Celebrations, a Special Cover with a Picture cancellation was released on 20th October 2009 by the Kerala Postal Circle.

Built in the year 1909, the KADALUR POINT Lighthouse:

  • Tower is CIRCULAR made of Stone
  • Tower is with BLACK & WHITE Bands
  • Height is around 34 meters
  • Color scheme of the LIGHT is WHITE
  • LIGHT character is FLASH every 5 seconds

0007. Finland - Lighthouse (250th Anniversary of Finnish Maritime Administration)



Maritime and Lighthouse always move hand-on-hand. 

Here, the Finnish Maritime Administration celebrated its 250th Anniversary in 1946.  To commemorate the anniversary, a stamp was released on 19-Sep-1946. 

The stamp priced 8 Finnish Markka has an image of a Lighthouse alongwith a Marine Ship in the back-drop.

0006. Estonia - Pakri Tuletorn Lighthouse


Pakri Tuletorn Lighthouse is located in the Pakri Peninsula of Estonia.  It is the first lighthouse in the Pakri peninsula.  Estonia Post commemorated this highest lighthouse by releasing a Stamp valued at 1 kroon 70 senti and a Picture cancellation on 5-Jul-1995.

Built in the year 1889, the PAKRI TULETORN Lighthouse:

  • Tower is CONICAL brick
  • Height is around 52 meters
  • Color scheme of the LIGHT is WHITE
  • LIGHT character is 1 (ONE) FLASH every 15 seconds

0005. Finland - Bengtskar Lighthouse



On 10th Sep'2003, Finland postal department issued 5 (five) stamps featuring Lighthouses in the Gulf of Finland.  Pictured are the Lighthouses of Bengtskar, Harmaja, Russaro, Ronnskar and Soderskar.

Situated 25 kilometers South-West of Hanko, BENGTSKAR Lighthouse stands as a Tallest Lighthouse in Scandinavia.  The Lighthouse stands on the rocky islet in the Gulf of Finland.  The lighthouse was damaged during the World War I and II.  Later on, the lighthouse was renovated and today, the Lighthouse has turned into a Museum.

Built in the year 1906, the BENGTSKAR Lighthouse:
  • Tower is CIRCULAR made of stone
  • ELEVATION is 52 meters above the sea
  • Has 252 steps of the spiral staircase
  • LIGHT character is 3 (THREE) FLASHES every 20 seconds

0004. India - Kollam Tangassery Lighthouse Picture Cancellation


The cancellation depicts the Tangassery Point Lighthouse in the city of Kollam in Kerala.  The Lighthouse was built in the year 1902.  This lighthouse acted as an outpost during Portuguese, Dutch and British rules.  The lighthouse stands on the land near the fort of Kollam. 

The Tangassery Lighthouse:

  • Colour scheme of the LIGHT is WHITE
  • Light character is 3 (THREE) FLASHES every 15 seconds
  • ELEVATION is around 42 metres
  • Painted with RED and WHITE DIAGONAL bands

0003. India - Cochin Lighthouse Picture Cancellation


The cancellation is of Cochin Lighthouse.  The Lighthouse is situated on Vypin Island near Cochin.  The Lighthouse was built by British in the 1830s. The original lighthouse was replaced in 1920, and then in 1936.

The Cochin Lighthouse:
  • Tower is Circular Double Shell Concrete
  • Colour scheme of the LIGHT is WHITE
  • Light character is 4 (FOUR) FLASHES every 20 seconds
  • ELEVATION is around 49 metres
  • Painted with RED and WHITE HORIZONTAL bands

0002. India - Mangalore Lighthouse Picture Cancellation



The cancellation depicts the Mangalore Lighthouse, the coastal city of Karnataka.  The Lighthouse was constructed by the 18th century ruler, Tipu Sultan.  Tipu Sultan personally wanted to develop the city as great naval importance.  The port city acted as a valuable tract of land containing a port of commercial and strategic importance to his capital, Mysore.

Because of high rise buildings, the view of the Lighthouse was obstructed and hence, the Lighthouse has become non-operational.  The surroundings of the Lighthouse was made into a park, which was named after the great Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore.

The Mangalore Lighthouse:
  • Tower is Masonary with Square lattern
  • ELEVATION is around 15 metres
  • Presently non-operational

0001. India - Minicoy Lighthouse


India celebrated the centenary of one of its Lighthouse in the year 1985 and it is the Minicoy Lighthouse.  The Lighthouse is located in the Minicoy Island. 

The Minicoy Island is the Southern most Island of Lakshadweep which is located in Arabian Sea of Indian Western Coast Line.

A Commemorative Stamp of  Re.1 denomination on 2nd February 1985 was released by India Post to mark  the occasion of the 100 Years of Minicoy Lighthouse.  This stamp is released in the theme - LIGHTHOUSE.

  • Colour Scheme of the LIGHT is WHITE
  • Light Character is FLASH WHITE every 15 seconds
