0136. Croatia - Pokonji dol Lighthouse

Pokonji dol is a round shape Islet, situated South-East of the harbour of Hvar.   The Pokonji dol Lighthouse is located in the central part of the islet.  The Lighthouse got its name after the islet on which it was built.  The Lighthouse is a one of the valuable tourist souvenirs of Hvar.  Ships arriving in Hvar from Adriatic must pass close to the islet.

The combination of the white light beam from Pokonji dol along with the red flash beam from the nearby island of Jerolim guides the sea passage for the sailing ships.   The strong light beams marks the sailing route from the Islands of Korcula, Lastova and Susac towards the Hell's Islands.  The light is automated.

0135. Croatia - St. Nicholas Lighthouse

The St. Nicholas Lighthouse is one of the smallest Adriatic Lighthouse(s).  It is located on the biggest Dalmatian Island of Brač and in the Central part of the North coast of the Island.   The Lighthouse was built of the proximity of the quarry of Brac.   

Initially, it was planned to built a huge stone Lighthouse, but due to the non-availability of workers, in 1882, a relatively smallest lighthouse was erected.   But, the strong Light lenses and the resulting light beam, guides the sailing ships to Pucisca.  

The Lighthouse was automated in 1990s and since then only voyagers drop by.   Many tourists who spend their summer in Pucisca are not aware of this building - a valuable, cultural and historical monument at the outer promontory of the bay.  The light of St. Nicholas marks the only safe refuge to every day greater number of yachtsmen who cruise along the Northern coast of the Island of Brac.

0134. Croatia - St. Peter Lighthouse

The St. Peter Lighthouse has been one of the most prominent symbols of Makarska.  The Lighthouse is located 800 meters away from the centre of Makarska towards South-West.  The Lighthouse of St. Peter is included in the Cultural-Historical Project of "Stone Lights".  It has become one of the main tourist destination from May to October.

The Lighthouse is located on the tip of a forested peninsula and surrounded by one of the most beautiful nearby pebble beaches of the Adriatic Sea.

The Lighthouse was named after the promontory on which it was built.  The Lighthouse can be seen from all sailing directions because of the configuration of nearby coast.  Also, when seen from the sea, the unusual tower of the Lighthouse with the peaks of the Biokovo Mountain in the backgroud, seems even lower so that the Lighthouse resembles to a kind of wooden countryside living.

0102. Croatia - Prisnjak Lighthouse

The Prisnjak Lighthouse (shown with an arrow mark) is located on a small island off the North-West end of the much larger island Murter archipelago.  The island is special and diverse as it is covered by pine, oak and wild olive trees and curative plants.  North-West from Prisnjak, there are in sequence of islets Murvenjak, Visovac and Maslinjak.  The people from Murter during centuries sailed for fish in this channel.  The Lighthouse Prisnjak marked the returning route for the people.

The glass dome in the Lighthouse building reflects the sun rays miles away and the seafarer used to say that it lights also by daylight.  Old, mechanic light mechanism was changed with automatic technology in 1990.   Presently, the Lighthouse was renovated as tourist apartment.

The Prisnjak Lighthouse is one of the most visited lighthouses on the Adriatic Sea.

0101. Croatia - Mulo Lighthouse

The Mulo Lighthouse is located on a tiny island about 5 km South-West of Rogoznica.  Mulo from North is surrounded by several islets and shoals that were also the reason for building the Lighthouse.  The strong beam of light from the Lighthouse, caused the night traffic in the Adrian Sea to move further to the South, into a safer corridor, away from once perilous shoals and cliffs.

The mole was built on the North coast and is thus sheltered from South winds.  When Bora (a Northern to North-Eastern Wind in the Adriatic Sea) started to blow, the lighthouse keepers used to lift the boat into the storehouse.

The last of Lighthouse keeper retired in 1999.  Now, the Lighthouse is deserted with empty building.

0100. Croatia - Blitvenica Lighthouse

Remote from the group of islets and the farthest from the coast of Zirje rests isolated Blitvenica.  The Lighthouse is located on a tiny island about 7 kms South-West of Zirje and about 30 kms South-West of Sibenik.  The islet arises from the deep sea.  The surrounding of the islet is rich in variety of fishes.

The Blitvenica Lighthouse is one of the several very isolated Croatian Light Stations in the Adriatic Sea.  The construction of the Lighthouse was very slow.  Rough sea and the unsuitability for landing and unloading building material have prolonged the building.  Also, it is impossible to disembark on Blitvenica when one wishes; it can be done only when the sea "permits" it.  Sea currents are strong and dangerous because of great depths around Blitvenica.

The Lighthouse was automated in 1990.

0071. Croatia - Savudrija Lighthouse

Savudrija Lighthouse is the oldest Lighthouse on the Adriatic Sea.  It is the most Northern Croatian Lighthouse, situated near the Slovenian border and South of Italian Town, Trieste.  The Lighthouse marks the Southern entrance to the Gulf of Trieste.

Before World War II, the Lighthouse was known by its Italian name, Punta Salvore.

0055. Croatia - Porer Lighthouse

Croatia, a Central European country, has many islands, rockey isles and crags in the Adriatic Sea.  This demanded exceptional navigational skills.  There were about twenty night lighthouses along the coast of Croatia.  These lighthouses are referred to Adriatic Lighthouses.

Porer Lighthouse is located on a tiny scrap of land in the Northern Croatia, marking the southern tip of Istrian Peninsula.   The lighthouse is accessible only by boat.  Boat transportation is made available only in the morning;  landing at the lighthouse is difficult in the evening due to the west winds.   The lighthouse is 2.5 kms South-West of Rt.Kamenjak.
