0040. New Zealand (North Island) - Cape Egmont Lighthouse


Cape Egmont Lighthouse was first constructed on Mana Island near Wellington.  But, its light was confused with that of the Pencarrow Head Light.  In 1877, the tower was relocated to Cape Egmont and activated in 1881.

The Lighthouse marks the South-Westernmost point of North Island and North-Western entrance to Cook Strait.   The Taranaki Volcano stands behind the Lighthouse. 

New Zealand Post commemorated the Cape Egmont Lighthouse in its 2009 Scenic Lighthouses of New Zealand Stamp Set released on 7-Jan-2009.

0039. New Zealand (North Island) - Cape Brett Lighthouse


Cape Brett Lighthouse is situated at the entrance to the Bay of Islands and overlooks Piercy Island better known as the Hole in the Rock.  Cape Brett was named after the Rear-Admiral Sir Piercy Brett, the Lord of the Admiralty.

Cape Brett was also the first of the three lighthouses in New Zealand to float the rotating light on a bed of Mercury.  Previously lights had been supported by wheels.

New Zealand Post commemorated the Cape Brett Lighthouse in its 2009 Scenic Lighthouses of New Zealand Stamp Set released on 7-Jan-2009.

0038. New Zealand (South Island) - Dog Island Lighthouse


The Dog Island Lighthouse is located at the Eastern approches to Faveaux Straint off the entrance to Bluff Harbour, at the Southern tip of New Zealand's South Island.  Dog Island Lighthouse is on a low flat island which only rises a couple of metres above sea level.

The Lighthouse is the Tallest Lighthouse in New Zealand.  Due to the poor soil condition of the island, the tower has had slight lean soon after it was built.

The Dog Island Lighthouse had the first revolving light in New Zealand, consisting of 16 individual oil lamps rotating inside a single lantern.  The Lighthouse was automated in 1989. 

This is one of the three Lighthouses of New Zealand which have stripes in the Tower.  The other two Lighthouses being Cape Campbell (South Island) and Cape Palliser (North Island).

0037. New Zealand (North Island) - Pencarrow Lighthouse


New Zealand's first Lighthouse, the Pencarrow, marks the Eastern entrance to Wellington Harbour.  The make-shift beacon made of Wood was blown away in 1841.  In June 1858, the iron tower from England arrived in the Pencarrow beach and then assembled on the cliffs.

The Light was first lit in 1-Jan-1859.  As the light was often shrouded by low fog, a new tower was constructed on the beach in 1906.   But, the Baring Head Lighthouse built in 1935 replaced both the Old and New Pencarrow Lighthouse(s).

0036. Antigua & Barbuda - Slangkop Point Lighthouse (South Africa)



The Slangkop Point Lighthouse was built to assist ships proceding from Table Bay around the Cape Point.

The Lighthouse marks a dangerous promontory on the West side of the Cape Peninsula, facing the open Atlantic Ocean.  The Lighthouse is located near the village of Kommetjie, South of Cape Town on the way to the Cape of Good Hope.

The Slongkop Point Lighthouse was commemorated by the Antigua & Barbuda in its Lighthouses of the World Series released in 20-Apr-1998.

Built in the year 1991, the SLANGKOP POINT Lighthouse:

0035. USA - Detroit River Lighthouse Cachet Cover


Detroit River Lighthouse marks the Southern End of the Detroit River where Lake Erie enters the river.  Great Lakes traffic moves North along the river, through Lake St.Clair and then into Lake Huron.  The Lighthouse played an important role in the development of Shipping and Transportation between Lake Huron and Lake Erie.

The Lighthouse was automated in 1979 and is maintained by the Coast Guard.

Built in the year 1885, The DETROIT RIVER Lighthouse:

0034. Singapore - Horsburgh Lighthouse


The Horsburgh Lighthouse is a lighthouse which marks the Eastern entrance to the Straits of Singapore.  The Lighthouse was named after Captain James Horsburgh, a Scottish Hydrographer from East India Company, who mapped many seaways around Singapore in the 18th & 19th century.  This is Singapore's Oldest Lighthouse in the South China Sea.

The Lighthouse was built over an outcrop of rocks that for centuries was identified as Pedra Branca (white rock in Portuguese).  The Lighthouse is also known as Pedra Branca Lighthouse.

Singapore commemorated this Lighthouse with the release of stamp in the year 1982.

0033. New Zealand (North Island) - Cape Reinga Lighthouse



Cape Reinga is the North-Westernmost tip of the North Island of New Zealand.  Cape Reinga is considered the seperation market between the Tasman Sea to the West and the Pacific Ocean to the East.  From the Lighthouse it is possible to watch the tidal race as the two seas clash to create unsettled waters just off the coast.

The Lighthouse at Cape Reinga was built in 1941, replacing Cape Maria van Diemen Lighthouse located on nearby Motuopao Island, which has been built 1879.   The Lighthouse was fully automated.

New Zealand commemorated this Lighthouse with the release of:

a) 20c stamp in 1996 and
b) $2.50 stamp under the 2009 Scenic Lighthouses of New Zealand Stamp
          Set released on 7-Jan-2009

0032. Australia - Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse Picture Cancellation



Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse, also known as Wollongong Harbour Lighthouse, is a historic Lighthouse located at the end of the breakwater on the South-East side of Wollongong Harbour. 

Wollongong is the only place in the East of Australia to have two Lighthouses located in close proximity of each other, the other being Wollongong Head Lighthouse.

The Lighthouse is seriously deteriorated in 1978 and later on was restored in 2000-02.  This Lighthouse is no longer used and is listed an Official Heritage Building.

The Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse affectionately known as Old Wollongong Lighthouse by the locals was built in 1871.  The WOLLONGONG BREAKWATER Lighthouse:

0031. France (New Caledonia) - Amedee Lighthouse


The Amedee Lighthouse is an Iron Lighthouse located on Amedee Island, 24 km away from Noumea, New Caledonia.

This magnificent Lighthouse, the pride of New Caledonia, is claimed locally to be the World's Tallest Cast Iron Tower.  The Lighthouse was pre-fabricated in France in 1862, shipped halfway around the world and laboriously assembled.

This stamp was released on 25-Nov-1965 to commemorate the 100 years of the Lighthouse.

The Punta Maisi Lighthouse is located at the extreme Eastern tip of the Island commanding a view of the Windward Passage, a strait in the Caribbean Sea, between the islands of Cuba and Hispaniola.  The strait lies between the Easternmost region of Cuba and the North-West of Haiti.

This Lighthouse was commemorated by Cuba with the release of the stamp in the year 1980 (1st Lighthouse series).

The Faro de Jagua Lighthouse is Cienfuegos Province on the South coast of Cuba at the entrance to the Rio Yaguanabo.

This Lighthouse was commemorated by Cuba with the release of the stamp in the year 1980 (1st Lighthouse series).

The Faro de Roncali Lighthouse is located on Cabo de San Antonio (Cape San Antonio) at the extreme Western tip of the Island, overlooking the Yucatan Strait which separates Cuba from Mexico.  The Lighthouse was named for Count Federico Roncali, the Spanish Governor of Cuba during its construction.

This Lighthouse was commemorated by Cuba with the release of the stamp in the year 1980 (1st Lighthouse series).

0027. South Africa - Pelican Point Lighthouse


The Lighthouse was built by the South African Government during their Administration of Walvis Bay Territory.  After the independence of Namibia in the year 1990, the Pelican Point is under the control of Namibian Government.  

One of the naturally protected harbor on the South-West African Coast, the Lighthouse was commemorated by the Republic of South Africa with the release of stamp on 9-Jun-1988.

The Pelican Point Lighthouse was commemorated by the Namibian Post on 18-Jun-2010.

0026. Canada - Louisbourg Lighthouse


Louisbourg Lighthouse is a historic Canadian Lighthouse at Louisbourg - Nova Scotia.  It is the site of the First Lighthouse in Canada.  This Canada's oldest Light Station, built by France during the period when Cape Breton Island was a French colony.  

Nova Scotia is the province at the extreme South-Eastern corner of Canada. The Southern and Eastern parts of the province lie on a peninsula facing the Atlantic to the East and the Bay of Fundy to the West.

Canada commemorated the Lighthouse in the Nova Scotia Province with the release of stamp on 21-Sep-1984.

The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse is a Lighthouse located on the Toronto Islands in Toronto - Ontario.   Ontario has a tremendous width East to West, including the entire Canadian side of the Great Lakes.  This is the Oldest Lighthouse in Ontario and Second Oldest in Canada.

Canada commemorated the reputed to be the Oldest existing Lighthouse on the either side of Great Lakes with the release of stamp on 21-Sep-1984.

0023. Canada - Fisgard Lighthouse


The Fisgard Lighthouse was the First Lighthouse on Canada's West Coast.  A 19th century Light, the Light here was automated in the year 1929.

Built by the British in 1860, when Vancouver Island was not yet part of Canada, Fisgard's White Tower has stood faithfully at the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour. Once a beacon for the British Royal Navy's Pacific Squadron, today Fisgard still marks home base for the Royal Canadian Navy.

Canada commemorated the Lighthouse in the British Columbian region with the release of stamp on 21-Sep-1984.

0022. Alderney - Corblets Bay and Fort


Fort Corblets is one of the many huge Victorian forts on the tiny Channel Island of Alderney. The beach, known simply as “Corblets” is where most of the surfing can be done here.

As a result of its strategic military location and the German occupation during World War II, the Alderney Island has a fascinating collection of fortifications, most of which were open to public for exploring.

A Lighthouse was seen (shown in the arrow mark) on the other side of Corblet Bay.

The stamp was released by Alderney Post in the year 1983 (under the Island Scenes).

0021. Isle of Man - Douglas Head Lighthouse


The Douglas Head Lighthouse is at Douglas Head on the Isle of Man between Great Britain and Ireland. The Station was established in 1832 by the Isle of Man Harbour Board. 

The Douglas Head Lighthouse was commemorated by Isle of Man with the release of 16p stamp on 28-Feb-1978.

0020. Isle of Man - Point of Ayre Lighthouse


The island nation, Isle of Man, located in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland has the Oldest Lighthouse, The Point of Ayre (High) Lighthouse.

The Lighthouse was first lit in 1818. The Point of Ayre is the Northernmost point of the Isle of Man.  It lies at the Northern end of Ramsey Bay.

The Point of Ayre (High) Lighthouse was commemorated by Isle of Man with the release of 14p stamp on 28-Feb-1978.

0019. Australia - 150th Anniversary of Macquarie Lighthouse


The Macquarie Lighthouse was the First Australian Lighthouse in Australia.

To Commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Lighthouse, a 5 cent stamp was released on 27-Nov-1968.

The Macquarie Lighthouse, also known as South Head Upper Light, was the first, and is the longest serving lighthouse in Australia.  The Lighthouse is located near the entrance to Sydney Harbour.  The Lighthouse was named after the Governor Macquarie. 

Originally built in 1818, the Macquarie Lighthouse has an important place in the history of Sydney’s settlement. The MACQUARIE Lighthouse:

0018. Barbados - South Point Lighthouse


South Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse located in the South of Barbados. It is the oldest lighthouse in Barbados. It was brought to Barbados in 1852, one year after being shown at London’s Great Exhibition, and reassembled on the Southernmost point of the island.

The lighthouse is now considered to be more of a national landmark and tourist attraction. 

To commemorate the Lighthouse, the stamp was released on 17-Nov-1972 and the lighthouse has been depicted on the reverse of a 5 Cent coin.

0017. Australia - Devonport Lighthouse Picture Cancellation


Australia's island state of Tasmania is located off the South-Eastern coast.  The island is shaped roughly like a shield.  The island is accessible by Air and also by the Sea.  This makes regular sailings on the mainland to Devonport in Tasmania.

Devonport is a city in the North-Western part of Tasmania.  The city is situated at the mouth of the Mersey river.  The Mersey Bluff Lighthouse standing at the mouth of the Mersey River near Devonport is unusual in Australia with its distinctive Vertical Red striped day mark.

The picture cancellation released by the Devonport Philatelic Centre depicts a Lighthouse in the background.

The most Lighthouses in Tasmania are on the North coast.  These lighthouses are easily accessible by road.  But, elsewhere, many of the lighthouses are in more remote locations.

0016. Namibia - Swakopmund Lighthouse


Swakopmund is a city on the coast of North-Western Namibia.  The city is an example of German colonial Architecture. 

The Swakopmund Lighthouse was commemorated by the Namibian Post with the release of stamp on 18-Jun-2010.

0013. Germany - Picture Cancellation of Oldest Lighthouse


Prerow, the Land between Bodden and Baltic Sea, has sandy - stoneless beaches.  The village of Prerow with its over 1800 in-habitants has become the largest village on the Darss. 

Prerow boasts the Oldest Lighthouse in Germany which is constructed around year 1848. 

The picture cancellation bears a Lighthouse with the date of 7-Aug-1952.

0012. Japan - Centennial of Kannonzaki Lighthouse


The Kannonzaki Lighthouse is located at the entrance of the Bay of Tokyo on Cape Kannon.  The Lighthouse had the illustrious history of being the First Western Style Lighthouse to have been constructed in Japan.

To commemorate the Centennial of its construction, a Special Stamp was released in 1968.

0011. Cuba - del Morro Lighthouse


The Castillo del Morro Lighthouse was built on the ramparts of the El Morro Castle.  This Lighthouse was by far the Cuba's best known Lighthouse.  The Lighthouse was located on the east side of the very narrow entrance to Havana Harbour.

The stamp was released on 17-Jan-1949 to commemorate the Centenary of the del Morro Lighthouse of Cuba.
