Australia's island state of Tasmania is located off the South-Eastern coast. The island is shaped roughly like a shield. The island is accessible by Air and also by the Sea. This makes regular sailings on the mainland to Devonport in Tasmania.
Devonport is a city in the North-Western part of Tasmania. The city is situated at the mouth of the Mersey river. The Mersey Bluff Lighthouse standing at the mouth of the Mersey River near Devonport is unusual in Australia with its distinctive Vertical Red striped day mark.
The picture cancellation released by the Devonport Philatelic Centre depicts a Lighthouse in the background.
The most Lighthouses in Tasmania are on the North coast. These lighthouses are easily accessible by road. But, elsewhere, many of the lighthouses are in more remote locations.
