0067. Jamaica - Morant Point Lighthouse


The Morant Point Lighthouse is the oldest Lighthouse on the Jamaican island and the first cast iron Lighthouse built in the Western Hemisphere.  The Lighthouse is located in Golden Grove, at the Easternmost point of Jamaica jutting out into the Caribbean Sea.


The Lighthouse was constructed by the African slaves from Sierra Leone in 1841.


Jamaica Post  commemorated  the  Morant Point Lighthouse by the release of 50 Jamaican Dollar stamp on 4-Jul-2011.


Built in 1841, the Morant Point Lighthouse:
  • Tower is ROUND cast iron
  • Tower is painted WHITE and RED HORIZONTAL bands
  • Height is 35 meters
  • Colour scheme of the LIGHT is WHITE
  • LIGHT character is 3 (three) FLASHES every 20 seconds
